SKU 2016
Category: Volkswagen IRS High-Performance Axles
A specialized, long-reach axle solution for high-performance Volkswagen IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) vehicles. At 16 1/4" in length, SKU 2016 is designed for custom "wide-track" setups or off-road applications where increased suspension travel requires a longer shaft than the standard factory length. Like the shorter versions in this series, it features a "floating" spline design to eliminate the mechanical binding that frequently destroys CV joints in modified Volkswagens.
Performance & Fitment
- Application: Long-Travel / Wide-Track IRS Rear Axle Set
- Length: 16 1/4"
- Spline: 33-Tooth (1.062" OD, 2 3/8" spline length)
VW Type 1 (Beetle/Bug): Ideal for "Baja Bug" builds or long-travel sand rails.
VW Type 2 (Bus/Transporter): Heavy-duty replacement for customized IRS rear ends.
VW Type 3: Fits IRS-equipped models requiring extended axle length.
Compatibility: Designed for standard 33-spline CV joints (Type 1, 924/944, or 002/Bus styles).
Premium Construction
Material: Forged from high-strength solid alloy steel, engineered to withstand the high-torque demands of performance air-cooled or water-cooled conversion engines.
Extended Spline Design: By removing the inboard shoulder, the CV joint is allowed to "float" along the 2 3/8" spline. This accommodates the natural change in axle distance as the trailing arm moves through its vertical arc, preventing the CV cage from bottoming out and shattering.
Heat Treatment: Through-hardened for maximum torsional strength and durability.
Manufacturing: Centerless ground for a perfectly consistent outer diameter, ensuring smooth operation and the elimination of surface-level stress risers.
Finish: Industrial powder coating for superior corrosion resistance.
⚠️ Technical Installation Notes
Measurement is Critical: The 16 1/4" length is specifically for modified or wide-track suspensions. Installing an axle that is too long for your track width will cause it to bottom out inside the CV joints, leading to immediate transmission or hub damage.
CV Boot Selection: Because the joint "floats" across a 2 3/8" spline, use high-articulation silicone or heavy-duty rubber CV boots to ensure they do not tear during extreme extension.
- Lubrication: Use high-moly content CV grease. The floating action requires constant lubrication on the splines to prevent "notching" and ensure the joint slides freely.
