🧮 The Logic of Link Pin Shimming: Link pin shims serve a dual purpose. First, changing the ratio of shims on the inside versus the outside of the trailing arm directly adjusts your front wheel camber angle. Second, the total number of shims used across both upper and lower pins must equal a fixed mathematical baseline to guarantee the upper and lower trailing arms travel in perfectly parallel vertical arcs. Miscalculating the shim stack will force the arms to twist inward or outward as the suspension compresses, resulting in severe suspension binding, accelerated bush wear, and unpredictable steering deflections.
❌ Never Mix and Match Shim Profiles: This kit is explicitly engineered for 7/8" diameter King Kong hardware. Standard vintage Volkswagen link pin beams utilize much smaller 18mm or 22mm hardware. Do not attempt to use standard VW shims on a 7/8" pin (as they will not fit), and never use oversized washers or loose-fitting substitute shims. A loose shim will rapidly oscillate under racing conditions, chewing through the spindle face and destroying the pin threads.
❌ Clean and Deburr the Contact Surfaces: Before selecting your shim stacks, thoroughly clean the faces of the trailing arm bosses, the spindle receivers, and the pins themselves. Any trapped sand grain, burr from welding, or old hardened grease will corrupt your alignment measurements. Wipe down all 40 steel shims with a clean solvent to remove any protective storage oils before calculating your final stack.
❌ Liberal Lubrication is Mandatory: Link pin shims are subjected to constant oscillating friction as the front trailing arms sweep through their suspension cycle. Assembling the shim stacks dry will cause immediate metal-on-metal galling, high heat buildup, and a rapid breakdown of your front-end alignment tolerances. Coat each shim generously with a premium, high-impact waterproof chassis grease or a high-pressure molybdenum-disulfide compound during final assembly.
