Category: Volkswagen Link Pin Performance Torsion Leaf Springs

Engineered by Sway-A-Way, these precision-engineered torsion leaf spring stacks are designed specifically for classic Volkswagen Link Pin front ends. Factory VW front leaf springs on vintage vehicles are frequently fatigued, resulting in a saggy, wallowing front end that dives aggressively under braking. This premium replacement stack delivers a calculated 5% increase in spring rate, acting as the ultimate "stock-plus" upgrade. It perfectly restores original ride height and geometry while introducing a subtle, highly refined boost in stability and cornering control without sacrificing any original vintage ride compliance.
Performance & Fitment
    • Application: Classic Volkswagen vehicles equipped with an early-style Link Pin front beam suspension assembly (commonly found on early Beetles, Karmann Ghias, and Type 1 platforms).

    • Length: 37 3/8” (Exact factory nominal dimension for standard-width link pin beams).

    • Spring Rate: +5% Stiffer than OEM. Custom-tailored for the purist restorer looking to eliminate decades of spring sag and improve highway tracking stability while maintaining authentic factory ride comfort.

  • Premium Construction

    • Material: Custom Alloy Spring Steel. Forged from a proprietary, high-grade spring steel formulation designed to handle endless torsional twisting cycles without settling, sagging, or developing memory sag.

    • Manufacturing Process: Heat-Treated & Shot-Peened. Through-hardened for uniform strength, then shot-peened with high-velocity metallic shot. Shot-peening compresses the outer skin of the steel, eliminating microscopic surface imperfections and vastly extending the fatigue life of the leaves under heavy loads.

    • Precision Machining: CNC-Drilled Grub Screw Sockets. The alignment indentations are precision CNC-drilled into the center of the leaf stack. This guarantees that your center beam grub screws lock flawlessly into place, preventing the leaf pack from shifting side-to-side inside the tubes.

    • Finish: Micro-Oiled Protection. Coated in a specialized protective oil to seal out moisture during transport and installation, preventing deep surface corrosion and pitting.

  • 🇩🇪 Air-Cooled VW Front Beam Tech & Installation Notes

Upgrading internal torsion leaf springs inside a classic Volkswagen twin-tube front axle requires specific mechanical procedures to ensure smooth suspension articulation:

  • ❌ Stacking the Leaves Correctly: Torsion leaf packs are comprised of multiple individual leaves bundled together. When sliding the new Sway-A-Way stack into the axle tubes, you must verify that the individual leaves remain perfectly flush and aligned. If the pack fans out or twists inside the tube, it will bind heavily against the inner delrin or brass beam bushings, resulting in a locked, completely rigid front suspension that won't flex.

  • ⚠️ Aligning the Center Grub Screw: The center grub screw (and its lock nut) located on the outside center of the front beam tubes is the only component holding the leaf springs in place. Take your time when feeding the stack through the beam. Ensure the CNC-drilled indent on the leaf pack lines up perfectly with the grub screw hole. If you tighten the grub screw onto the flat face of the spring rather than into the dimple, it will crush the metal, deform the stack, and allow the front suspension to slide horizontally while driving.

  • ❌ Never Reinstall Dry Pack Stacks: Torsion leaves operate by sliding against one another as they twist. Installing a leaf pack dry will cause rapid friction wear, heat fatigue, and an unbearable metal-on-metal squeaking sound. Before feeding the stack into the beam, apply a massive, generous coat of heavy-duty, waterproof chassis grease or high-pressure moly grease across the entire length of the spring pack.

  • ❌ Inspect Your Trailing Arm Bushings & Seals: While the leaf springs are out of the beam, inspect the outer trailing arm bushings (or bearings) and seals. Installing fresh leaf springs into a beam with worn-out, ovaled-out outer bushings will create severe suspension binding and erratic alignment deflection. Upgrade to fresh urethane or classic brass beam bushings for optimal performance.

  • ❌ Left & Right Arm Alignment: When reinstalling the link pin trailing arms onto the ends of the new leaf packs, confirm that the outer arm grub screws lock securely into the matching end dimples of the springs. Always check your link pin shim configuration (using the factory offset chart) to ensure proper camber and toe geometry before tightening the assembly down.
