🛠️ Chromoly Fabrication & VW Suspension Tech Notes

Integrating a 4130 splined collar into a custom suspension build requires precise fabrication techniques to maintain structural integrity and prevent component distortion:

• 👨‍ welds: 4130 Chromoly Welding Best Practices: Because this collar is machined from 4130 chromoly steel, appropriate welding procedures must be observed to prevent brittle zones near the weldment. If welding this collar to thick spring plates or suspension arms using the TIG process, a mild-steel filler rod such as ER70S-2 or a high-strength ER80S-D2 is highly recommended to ensure the weld remains ductile and resistant to cracking under severe chassis twisting.

• 🔥 Control the Heat to Prevent Spline Distortion: Excessive heat during the welding process can distort the collar's internal diameter or warp the precision-broached spline profile. To avoid this, utilize a heat-sink heatsink (such as an old, scrap matching torsion bar end wrapped in anti-seize) inside the collar while welding, or weld in short, alternating segments (stitch welding) to allow the heat to dissipate evenly.

• 📐 Verify Spline Indexing Before Final Welding: Classic VW torsion bars utilize an unequal spline layout (40 splines inside the chassis, 44 splines on the outer end) to achieve micro-adjustments via "hunting tooth" rotation. When welding this collar to a custom spring plate or arm, ensure your indexing angle is perfectly mapped out relative to the chassis centerline. Miscalculating the resting angle of the collar by even one spline tooth can throw your baseline ride height off significantly.

• ❌ Post-Weld Inspection and Cleaning: After the fabrication and welding processes are complete, allow the assembly to cool naturally at room temperature—never quench chromoly steel in water or oil, as this induces extreme brittleness. Once cooled, run a wire brush or spline-cleaning tool through the internal teeth to remove any accidental weld spatter, scaling, or anti-seize residue before attempting final chassis mockup.
