Torsion Bar Set – Alfetta – 36.688" x 1.075" Diameter – Fits 1985 GT V6 (Pair)
SKU 4707
Performance & Fitment
Application: 1985 Alfa Romeo GT V6 (GTV6).
Diameter: 1.075". A massive step up from stock diameters, providing a stiffer, performance-oriented spring rate that keeps the front geometry flat through hard cornering.
Length: 36.688" (Exact factory longitudinal length fitment).
Design: Solid, single-piece alloy construction optimized for high torsional resistance.
Material: High-Strength Alloy Steel. Forged from premium racing-grade steel designed to handle continuous structural twisting without sagging or losing its spring memory over time.
Manufacturing Process: Centerless Ground & Heat-Treated. The bars are through-hardened to achieve an optimal balance of tensile strength and elasticity. The centerless grinding process strips away surface imperfections, creating a mirror-smooth finish that eliminates "stress risers" where micro-fractures typically start.
Coating: Heavy-Duty Powder Coating. Seals the raw steel against road moisture, oil, and debris, ensuring long-term protection against corrosive pitting.
❌ Dramatic Roll Control Upgrade: The factory GTV6 suspension relied on relatively soft front torsion bars combined with a heavy front anti-roll bar, which often resulted in excessive body roll and inside wheel lift during aggressive cornering. Upgrading to a 1.075" bar shifts the roll-resistance burden back to the actual springs, flatlining the chassis through corners and maximizing your front tire contact patch.
❌ The Spline "Clocking" Puzzle: Alfa Romeo torsion bars feature a different number of splines on the front end versus the rear end. This intentional "vernier" engineering allows for ultra-fine adjustments to the car's ride height. By rotating the bar one spline forward at the lower control arm and one spline backward at the rear crossmember, you can raise or lower the ride height in minuscule fractions of an inch to corner-balance the car perfectly.
❌ Clean the Spline Receivers: Before sliding the new 1.075" bars into place, thoroughly clean out the splined sockets in both the front lower control arms and the rear chassis crossmember. Decades of old grease, road grit, and rust can jam the splines. A stiff wire brush and penetrating oil are mandatory to prevent stripping the splines during insertion.
❌ Anti-Seize and Lubrication: Always apply a generous coat of heavy-duty, waterproof anti-seize or a moly-based grease to both splined ends before installation. Because these splines must allow for slight movement as the lower control arm moves through its suspension arc, running them dry will cause severe squeaking, internal corrosion, and eventual seizure.
- ❌ Maintain Directional Orientation: High-performance torsion bars are pre-stressed during manufacturing or take a specific "set" during their first heat cycles under load. Look for "Left" and "Right" markings on the ends of the bars. Swapping the sides will force the steel grain to untwist against its structural set, which can result in rapid bar sagging or catastrophic snapping under hard braking.
