Spring Plate Set - VW Swing Axle (Race) – 5.910" Collar
Performance & Fitment
Application: Designed exclusively for high-performance and competitive Volkswagen Swing Axle rear suspension setups.
Torsion Bar Compatibility: Engineered to pair seamlessly with intermediate 24 11/16" long rear torsion bars.
Collar Length: 5.910". The extended splined collar is robotically jig-welded and heat-treated to ensure absolute squareness and unmatched structural integrity at the chassis connection point.
Finish: Raw Steel. Shipped deliberately unpainted to allow race teams to easily perform mandatory pre-race safety inspections (such as Magnaflux) or weld on custom limit-strap tabs before applying their own choice of finish.
Material: 1/4" Thick 4130 Chromoly Steel. This aerospace-grade alloy provides a massive increase in yield strength over traditional spring steel, completely eliminating the twisting or permanent bowing common under aggressive launches and hard landings.
Advanced Heat Treatment: The entire assembly undergoes a post-weld thermal heat-treatment process. This relieves internal stresses from the welding arc and through-hardens the plate and collar for ultimate fatigue resistance.
Precision Splines: Internal collar splines are precision-broached to maintain a zero-slop fit on the torsion bar, distributing torque evenly to eliminate any indexing backlash or spline flattening.
⚠️ Caution: High-Tension Energy: Torsion bars and spring plates store immense mechanical force. Never attempt to pry the spring plate off the lower chassis stop without using a dedicated spring plate unloading tool or a securely controlled heavy-duty floor jack. An unguided release of this assembly can cause catastrophic injury or severe frame damage.
❌ Raw Finish Maintenance: Because these plates are delivered in a raw steel finish, they will oxidize quickly if exposed to moisture. After performing your initial mock-up and any necessary tech inspections (Magnaflux/dye-penetrant), apply a high-quality chassis paint, powder coat, or a micro-thin layer of dry-film rust preventative. Avoid painting the internal splines of the collar.
❌ Torsion Bar Match Verification: You must verify your torsion bar length before finalizing your chassis build. This plate requires 24 11/16" bars. Combining a 5.910" collar with an incorrect bar length (like a 21 3/4" or 26 9/16" bar) will leave the bar floating freely inside the tube or prevent the outer torsion housing cap from seating flush.
❌ High-Performance Bushing Lubrication: For racing applications, high-durometer urethane, delrin, or bronze bushings are typically used. Apply a liberal amount of premium waterproof, silicone- or teflon-based grease to the inner and outer contact patches of the plate collar. This prevents bushing binding and eliminates the heavy squeaking that occurs during aggressive suspension cycles.
- ❌ Race Flange Alignment: When bolting the spring plate to the swing axle housing flange, ensure your pivot seals are brand new and the housing sweeps smoothly through its travel arc. Use Grade 8 or higher hardware, torque to strict racing specifications, and secure the bolts with a drop of red thread-locking compound or safety wire to prevent them from backing out under severe race vibrations.
