Spring Plate Set - VW Swing Axle (Standard)
SKU 4101
Category: Volkswagen Swing Axle Spring Plates
These high-performance spring plates are engineered specifically for classic Volkswagen Swing Axle rear suspension configurations. Fabricated from heavy-duty 1/4" spring steel, these plates provide a massive upgrade in rigidity and structural integrity over flimsy, stamped factory units. Featuring a precision-welded, splined collar, they are designed to handle the increased torque and cornering loads of built street cars, vintage racers, and rugged off-road baja bugs.
Performance & Fitment
Application: Designed specifically for Volkswagen vehicles equipped with a rear Swing Axle transmission setup (e.g., Early Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Type 3).
Torsion Bar Compatibility: Optimized exclusively for 21 3/4" long rear torsion bars.
Collar Length: 2.93". The splined collar is robotically jig-welded to ensure absolute squareness and flawless alignment with the chassis torsion housing.
Fitment Note: Ideal for standard-width retrofits and high-performance restorations looking to maintain correct rear suspension geometry without plate deflection.
Premium Construction
Material: 1/4" High-Tensile Spring Steel. Unlike standard mild steel plates that can warp or permanently bow under heavy cornering or hard launches, this premium spring steel flexes under load and returns to perfectly true alignment.
Splined Collar: Precision-broached internal splines ensure a tight, slop-free slip fit onto your 21 3/4" torsion bars, distributing indexing loads evenly to eliminate spline stripping.
Finish: Heavy Zinc Plating. Provides deep-reaching galvanic corrosion resistance, shielding the raw steel from moisture, road salt, and debris, while maintaining a clean, classic look.
🛠️ Aircooled Suspension Tech & Installation Notes
Swapping rear spring plates on an aircooled VW requires precise execution to avoid handling imbalances or dangerous spring-back injuries:
⚠️ Caution: Loaded Torsion Tension: Spring plates operate under massive mechanical tension. When removing old plates or setting up new ones, never simply pry the plate off the lower chassis stop without a proper spring plate retainer/unloader tool or a securely placed floor jack. Uncontrolled release of the spring plate can cause severe personal injury or frame damage.
❌ Setting the Index Angle (Ride Height): Changing your spring plates is the perfect time to adjust or refresh your ride height. Because the inner and outer splines on VW torsion bars have different tooth counts (e.g., 40 inner, 44 outer), you can make fine-tune geometric adjustments. Rotating the bar one notch one way and the plate one notch the other allows you to raise or lower the vehicle in tiny, precise increments.
❌ Torsion Bar Length Verification: Double-check your existing torsion bars before ordering. VW used several lengths throughout production (21 3/4", 24 11/16", etc.). Forcing a 2.93" collar spring plate onto the wrong length bar will prevent the outer torsion cover plate from bolting down or cause the bar to float loosely inside the housing.
❌ Bushing Selection & Lubrication: Always replace your inner and outer rubber suspension grommets/bushings when installing new spring plates. If using high-performance Urethane or Polyurethane bushings, apply a liberal amount of water-resistant, silicone-based grease to the inner and outer surfaces of the plate collar. This prevents the infamous, annoying "VW squeak" during suspension cycling.
❌ Swing Axle Pivot Care: When bolting the spring plate to the axle housing flange (the three-bolt pattern), ensure the axle pivot seals are in good condition and the axle moves smoothly through its arc. Torque these bolts to factory spec with a drop of blue thread-locking compound to prevent backing out from road vibration.
