Swing Axle: 28 7/16" - 68 Bug & All Type 3
The SKU 2270 is a premium, high-strength replacement axle designed specifically for the "Long Axle" swing axle configuration found in late-model Bugs and all Type III Volkswagens. Unlike standard replacement parts, these axles are engineered for high-performance applications where the factory components often fail—specifically in drag racing or high-torque street use.
Performance & Fitment
Application: Heavy-Duty Swing Axle Replacement
Length: 28 7/16" (Standard "Long Axle" Length)
Spline: 12-Tooth
1968 VW Beetle (Bug): Direct fit for the final year of the US-market swing axle.
All VW Type III: Fits Notchback, Squareback, and Fastback models equipped with swing axle rear ends.
Custom Builds: Frequently used in sand rails or kit cars utilizing the 1968-style wide-track swing axle transaxle.
Premium Construction
Material: Forged from solid 4340 heat-treated US steel. This is a significant upgrade over the lower-grade steel used in OEM and budget-tier axles, offering much higher yield strength.
Precision Engineering: CNC machined for exact fitment and centerless ground to ensure a perfectly straight shaft with zero surface imperfections.
Controlled Flex: The consistent middle diameter is a deliberate design feature. By allowing the axle to "twist" slightly under extreme shock loads (like a hard launch), it acts as a torsion bar, protecting your expensive transmission gears from shattering.
Engagement: Features a precision-cut 12-tooth spline for a secure, slop-free connection to the differential side gears.
⚠️ Technical Installation Notes
Axle Boot Selection: Because these are "Long Axles," ensure you use the corresponding 1968-style axle boots. We recommend high-quality split or one-piece boots with heavy-duty clamps to prevent gear oil leaks.
Fulcrum Plates: When installing, inspect your fulcrum plates (the "half-moons") for wear. High-performance axles work best when the plates provide a smooth, tight fit within the differential.
Wheel Bearing: This axle must be used with the correct 1968/Type III rear wheel bearing and spacer stack-up.
Torque Warning: Ensure the 36mm axle nut is torqued to the factory specification (217+ ft-lbs). Failure to reach full torque can lead to the hub stripping the splines, even on high-strength 4340 steel.
