VW IRS Axle Set - 33 Tooth Spline
Performance & Fitment
- Application: Ultra-Long / Custom Wide-Track IRS Rear Axle Set
- Length: 21 3/8"
- Spline: 33-Tooth (1.062" OD, 2 3/8" spline length)
VW Type 1 (Beetle/Bug): Strictly for competition-level, long-travel desert racers.
Custom Sand Rails: Ideal for high-performance mid-engine or rear-engine buggies with exceptionally wide stances.
Custom Projects: Used in specialized kit cars or off-road conversions requiring significant axle reach.
Compatibility: Designed for high-performance 33-spline CV joints (Type 1, 924/944, or 002/091 Bus styles).
Material: Forged from solid high-strength alloy steel. At over 21 inches, material quality is critical to prevent the axle from acting like a torsion bar and "twisting" permanently under heavy torque.
Floating Spline Design: The 2 3/8" extended spline is "shoulderless," allowing the CV joint to "float" or slide along the shaft.
CV Protection: In extreme-travel setups, the distance between the transaxle and the hub changes significantly. This design prevents the axle from bottoming out and shattering the CV cage during hard landings or deep suspension compression.
Heat Treatment: Through-hardened to optimize the balance between surface hardness and torsional resilience.
Finish: Centerless ground for a perfectly consistent diameter and powder-coated for maximum protection against sand, mud, and moisture.
Mandatory Suspension Cycling: At 21 3/8", precision is everything. You must cycle your suspension through its full range of motion (from full "hang" to full "bump") without the shocks installed. If the axle is even 1/8" too long, it will punch through your transaxle flanges, causing catastrophic internal damage.
CV Joint Angle Limits: Long-travel suspensions often push CV joints beyond their designed operating angles. Ensure you are using high-articulation CV joints and that your trailing arm pivots are aligned to minimize "plunge" and excessive angles.
Boot Selection: Standard rubber boots will not survive the extreme stretching required by this axle length. Use high-performance silicone or heavy-duty racing boots.
- Lubrication: Use a high-quality, high-moly grease. The floating action requires constant lubrication on the splines to prevent "notching" and ensure the joint slides smoothly.
