SKU 2017

Category: Volkswagen IRS High-Performance Axles

The SKU 2017 represents the standard "upgrade" length in the high-performance Volkswagen IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) axle family. Engineered specifically to solve the common issue of CV joint failure in modified Volkswagens, these axles utilize a "shoulderless" design that allows for maximum suspension travel. Whether you are building a street-performance Beetle or a weekend woods buggy, these axles provide the durability needed for higher-than-stock torque loads.

Performance & Fitment

  • Application: High-Performance IRS Rear Axle Set
  • Spline: 33-Tooth (1.062" OD, 2 3/8" spline length)
    • VW Type 1 (Beetle/Bug): High-performance street, drag, or light off-road IRS builds.

    • VW Type 2 (Bus/Transporter): Heavy-duty replacement for IRS-equipped bus models.

    • VW Type 3: Fits IRS Notchback, Squareback, and Fastback models.

    • Compatibility: Designed to work with standard 33-spline CV joints (typically Type 1, 924/944, or 002 styles).

  • Premium Construction

    • Material: Forged from solid high-strength alloy steel, offering significantly higher yield strength than OEM factory axles.

    • Floating Spline Design: Unlike stock axles that have a fixed shoulder, SKU 2017 features a 2 3/8" extended spline. This allows the CV joint to "float" or slide along the shaft.

    • CV Protection: By allowing the joint to float, the axle accommodates the natural change in distance between the transaxle and the hub as the suspension moves. This prevents the CV cage from being "punched" and shattered by the axle during heavy compression or full extension.

    • Heat Treatment: Through-hardened to achieve the perfect balance of surface durability and torsional flexibility.

    • Finish: Centerless ground for a perfectly consistent outer diameter and powder-coated for maximum corrosion resistance.

  • ⚠️ Technical Installation Notes

  • Axle Bind: Even with a floating design, you must ensure the axle is the correct length for your track width. If the axle is too long, it will bottom out against the internal "stars" of the CV joints, which can damage your transmission bearings.

  • Boot Selection: Use high-quality, high-articulation CV boots. Because these axles are designed for performance and increased travel, standard low-quality rubber boots may tear prematurely under high angles.

  • Lubrication: Use a high-moly CV grease. The floating action requires the splines to stay lubricated to prevent the CV joint from "notching" the shaft over time.
